Flying Soon? Consider a Pre-Flight Ear Health Check

For many people, a holiday begins with excitement and anticipation. Unfortunately, for some travellers, it can also begin with ear pain, blocked ears, or discomfort during take-off and landing.

If you're planning to fly this summer, a pre-flight ear health check can provide peace of mind and help identify any ear-related issues before you travel.

Why Do Ears Sometimes Hurt When Flying?

During a flight, changes in cabin pressure require your ears to equalise pressure through a small passage called the Eustachian tube. Most of the time this happens naturally when swallowing, yawning, or chewing.

However, if your ears are blocked with wax, affected by congestion, or experiencing another ear problem, pressure may not equalise as easily. This can lead to:

  • Ear discomfort or pain

  • A feeling of blocked ears

  • Muffled hearing

  • Pressure that persists after landing

  • Difficulty hearing during your trip

What Is a Pre-Flight Ear Health Check?

A pre-flight ear health check is a simple assessment designed to identify potential ear issues before you travel.

At Ear Care Dorset, we examine the ear canals and eardrums using specialist equipment to assess your ear health and determine whether any ear wax removal may be beneficial before your journey.

The assessment can help identify:

  • Excessive ear wax build-up

  • Blocked ear canals

  • Signs of irritation or inflammation

  • Other ear health concerns that may require medical advice

If we identify signs of infection, damage, or any concerns outside our scope of practice, we'll advise you to contact your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

Ear Wax and Flying

Many people don't realise they have significant ear wax build-up until they experience hearing difficulties or discomfort.

While ear wax itself does not always cause problems during air travel, blocked ears can make existing pressure issues feel worse and may contribute to reduced hearing throughout your trip.

If excessive wax is found during your assessment, microsuction ear wax removal may help restore clear hearing before you fly.

Importantly, if your ears are healthy and clear, we'll tell you. We believe in honest, professional ear care and only recommend treatment when it is genuinely needed.

Who Should Consider a Pre-Flight Ear Health Check?

A pre-flight assessment may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Have experienced ear pain during previous flights

  • Feel that your ears are blocked

  • Have noticed reduced hearing

  • Wear hearing aids

  • Frequently suffer from ear wax build-up

  • Have not had your ears checked for some time

  • Simply want reassurance before travelling

Simple, Transparent Pricing

Our pre-flight ear health check costs £25, payable at the time of booking.

If your assessment identifies ear wax that would benefit from removal, microsuction treatment can be carried out during the same appointment for an additional £40.

  • Pre-flight ear health check: £25

  • Microsuction ear wax removal (if required): +£40

  • Total cost if treatment is needed: £65

If your ears are healthy and free from wax build-up, no further treatment is required, and you'll only pay the £25 assessment fee.
